From fighting neighborhood drug-dealing to curbing pollution to improving parks to addressing a perceived problem with vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods, participants in the Ka Leo O Kaua‘i community-empowerment program had a lot to celebrate last night. A heavy-pupu party with live entertainment, speakers on community-improvement issues identified and solved, and more, greeted those who attended the second anniversary of Ka Leo O Kaua‘i, called a “Celebration of Community,” at the Pi‘ikoi Building (former Gem store) of the Lihu‘e Civic Center.
Several hundred people turned out, and heard citizens including Kathleen West-Hurd (West Kaua‘i), Lionel Medeiros (Central Kaua‘i ) and Gary Pacheco (East and North Kaua‘i) outline myriad accomplishments of groups of concerned citizens acting together from Kekaha to Ha‘ena.
Recycling, bus stops, safety, planning, access, beautification, pedestrian safety, agriculture, public safety, housing, traffic, parking, speeding, flooding, wastewater, alcohol, and other topics and issues were discussed, with solutions proposed, at monthly meetings of Ka Leo O Kaua‘i groups meeting from Hanalei to Kekaha.
