KAPA‘A — The brand new scoreboard at the Ron Martin Field didn’t necessarily agree with the numbers that showed up towards the end of the double dip between Kapa‘a and Waimea, as the Menehune bounced back from a loss to Kaua‘i on Wednesday for the 6-3, 8-6 sweep of the Warriors.
With Waimea up 3-2 in the fourth frame, Kane Zalopany roped a solo homerun to right centerfield, barely missing the green scoreboard, increasing the score to 4-2.
Teammate Kellen Naka‘ahiki also got into the scoring mode with an RBI single, which made the tally, 5-2 in favor of Waimea. Zalopany added another RBI in the sixth, and Kapa‘a’s Travis Nakamura crossed the plate for the final run of the first contest for the 6-3 Waimea win.
Naka‘ahiki ripped an RBI single that started things off in the second game, but Kapa‘a rushed back, as Punzal nailed a homerun to centerfield in the third inning.
The Warriors poured it on with two runs via Nakamura and a Punzal RBI single, scoring Waylan Kupihea for the 3-1 lead. Naka‘ahiki’s RBI sacrifice fly inched Waimea closer, as Kori Sakahashi scored the second Menehune run. In the fourth, Kupihea’s 2-RBI double and a Waimea error gave the Warriors a 6-2 lead. Waimea stormed back towards the end of the game, as Kelly Batis, Troy Yamase (2 RBI’s), Keith Nonaka, Sakahashi, and Quinto Natividad contributed to the comeback. The Menehune held on for the 8-6 triumph and the sweep. Waimea improved to 2-1 and Kapa‘a dropped to 0-4.
