WAIMEA – All eyes were on Kirby Yates, and the Red Raider pitcher did not disappoint as he and the Kaua‘i defense held three hits in their 12-1 Waimea to just victory, Wednesday at the new, old, baseball field at the Waimea campus.
Yates, maintaining control through most of the game, began floundering in the late moments as the Menehune chalked up their score on his miscues.
Facing just three outs to end the contest in the fifth inning, Yates hit Kori Sakahashi who promptly stole secondbase.
Yates got past Brock Santiago on a strikeout, Troy Yamase flied out, and with Kane Zalopany getting first, Yates unglued back-to-back wild pitches to advance Sakahashi to third, the second bringing the Menehune across the plate and moving Zalopany to third. But, the scoring effort died as Quinton Natividad flied out.
Earlier, it was Red Raider fireworks as Kaua‘i piled up seven runs in the opening frame, added two and three runs in the second and third innings enroute to their victory, Yates finishing with a number of RBI on his triple, single, and getting aboard on a Menehune error before striking out.
Waimea will travel to the Ron Martin Field in Kapa‘a on Saturday, Mar. 26 for a double-header as both the Menehune and the Warriors are seeking their first win of the week-old KIF baseball season.
First pitch is at 10 a.m.
