PO‘IPU – Rosanne Shimogawa nailed top honors in the Breakaway Roping and the Second Division of Pole Bending to emerge as the All-Around highest scoring cowgirl of the day as the Kaua‘i All-Girl Rodeo Association hosted their rodeo, Sunday at the CJM Country Stables.
Shimogawa topped the Breakaway Roping with a 13.57 on two go’s and edged out Laureen Naumu-Balocan in the Second Division of Pole Bending with a 24.20 finish over Naumu-Balocan’s 24.64 charge.
Bongo Lee was in third in that division just .01 second back of Naumu-Balocan.
Kristyn Vasconcelles, donning a bright red outfit, screamed to the top of the Steer Undecorating with a blazing 4.74 on two go’s to headline her honor of Reserve All Around Cowgirl.
Earlier in the day, Vasconcelles topped the Barrels, First Division with a 17.75 over Wendy Tannery’s 17.84 finish.
Vasconcelles also finished second under Shimogawa in the Breakaway Roping with a 15.98 on two go’s, but topped the Dally Team competition with teammate Corrina Schumacher, the duo finishing the day at 53.75 on two go’s, the only team to successfully log two snags.
The rodeo was held under ideal conditions with gentle trades, a sunny sky, and whales cavorting in the bay to occupy spectators’ time between events and arena rakings.
Waylon Brun and Hallie Cristobel manned the microphones to keep the spectators aware of the constant flow of action in the arena, constantly reminding people that there are a lot of players behind the gates that contribute to a successful rodeo.
Some of these include Pat (Sam) Brun who was flagman for the day, Melissa Yamamoto, the arena director, Tom Runyan for coordinating the goats used in the Goat Tying event, Ashley Rita who got help from the CJM canine unit in manning the gate as well as stock pens, and timers Lori Cristobel and Barbara Buchum.
The next event on the calendar is the Keiki and High School rodeo scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 3 at the CJM Country Stables.
