Kori Sakamoto of the Waimea 14 and Under girls basketball team was excited as their team under coach Bobby Kamakele had edged out not only the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders under coach Brian Inouye, but also the Waimea JV girls basketball team in a special scrimmage game played Friday night at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Both coaches Kamakele and Inouye will be fielding teams in a special Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association / County of Kaua‘i girls invitational basketball tournament scheduled for March 24-26 at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
According to Karen Matsumoto to the KYBA, there are eight teams committed to the tournament including two from the neighbor islands.
In addition to the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders, Waimea will be fielding two teams under coach Kamakele.
Wailua will field a team coached by Talbert Tacbian, and the Gee Unit will be on the arena with coach Cecil Gee. Coach Billy Ramos’ Lihu‘e Comets will be the final Kaua‘i entry into the goodwill tournament.
Coach Terry Takata will be bringing over his Kona Tigers team, and from Maui, coach Steven Kramer will be bringing over a Maui Community team.
Matsumoto said the girls have been asking for such a tournament for a while now, and with the help of coaches will tip off.
