HONOLULU — Gov. Linda Lingle has nominated her appointment scheduler Marcia Klompus to the nine-member Hawaii Stadium Authority.
Klompa us, who is married to Lingle’s senior communication adviser Lenny Klompus, has served as an official with the Aloha Bowl, the Hula Bowl and the Aloha State Games.
Sen. Willie Espero, chairman of the Senate Business and Economic Development Committee, said he thought Klompus “would have something to contribute” because of her experience with the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium.
Espero, D-Ewa-Ewa Beach-Lower Waipahu, said he didn’t think Klompus’ ties with Lingle would be a problem for her confirmation.
“Hawaii is a small place, and you are bound to know lots of people,” he said.
Her nomination and two others — former Hawaii Republican Party official Kathleen Ahina and businessman Nelson Oyadomari — will be examined by Espero’s committee before it is considered by the entire Senate.
Klompus and her husband came to Hawaii in 1982 to assist former stadium manager Mackay Yanagisawa, who founded the Hula Bowl.
Klompus said the aging stadium should be used primarily for University of Hawaii football.
“If there wasn’t a university program with football, why have a stadium? Therefore, in our mind it has always been there for the use and comfort of the university and its fans,” Klompus said.
But she thinks the facility can be made “more user-friendly.”
