The KIF paddling squads saved their best performances for the last and final race, which was the perfect time for the Waimea boys and girls squads, who inched past their competitors for the victories yesterday at the Wailua River in the KIF Championship Regatta.
In the varsity girls contest, Waimea (3:49.00) beat out Kapa‘a (3:49.51) by less than a second. Kaua‘i High School took third-place with a time of 3:51.81.
Utilizing their never-say-die attitude, the Menehune, who finished third in the time trials, managed to jump over both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a for the victory in the finals.
Meanwhile, the varsity boys race came down to inches as well, with Waimea (3:15.35) edging out Kula (3:15.99) for the title. Island School picked up third-place honors with a 3:48.31. Kula held the top time in the time trials, but the Menehune turned the tables when it counted the most, with a win in the finals.
Kapa‘a (3:27.82) triumphed in the varsity mixed race, in another close competition over Waimea (3:28.10). Island School finished in third-place with a time of 3:20.73.
Kaua‘i (1:35.15) pulled out a win over Kapa‘a (1:41.61) in the JV girls contest. Island School grabbed the third slot at 1:50.10.
The Red Raiders (1:38.33) also snuck past Kapa‘a (1:38.70) in the JV mixed finals.
Up next is the HHSAA State Canoe Paddling Championships on March 4, held at Ke‘ehi Lagoon on O‘ahu.
