WAILUA – The Waimea High School boys squeaked to an unofficial top finish in the varsity boys competition at the KIF Paddling Regatta, Saturday at the Wailua River.
Kula men, garbed in bright yellow to match their equally bright yellow craft, drew the far lane and extracted loud cheers from the shorebank audience as they pushed against occasional surges against the Menehune men who inched ahead with a 321:23 finish against Kula’s 321:66 crossing.
“We won by a chinny-chin-chin,” the jubilant Menehune coaches smiled after confirming the unofficial times.
Kapa‘a High School finished in the third berth at 336:65.
The Kapa‘a Warriors, many of their men paddlers working back-to-back races, finished first in the Varsity Mixed competition with a 332:91 crossing, almost a full eight seconds ahead of Kula’s team who finished at 340:56, and the Menehune who finished at 341:09.

Race results as of press time were considered unofficial due to checks into the rules.
A first place finish in the competition gives the team six points. Second place is good for four points, third place is three points, fourth place yields two points, and fifth place is good for a point.
Points are cumulative, and during the championship race, points are doubled.
According to the KIF schedule, the Championship regatta is penned in to take place this Saturday at Wailua River starting at 9 a.m., but due to the cancellation of last week’s race due to high bacterial counts in the water, it was undetermined if this Saturday’s race will be a make-up race, or the champion-ship race.
