It’s dium pandemonium on Maui, as the Menehune edged the 4-time defending state champion Mililani Trojans boys soccer squad, 3-2, yesterday at Kana‘iapuni Staon the campus of Kamehameha Schools-Maui for the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Boys Soccer State Championships.
Mililani, the top seed in the tournament, felt the wrath of junior forward Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson, who scored two of the three goals.
Thompson nailed his first attempt through the goal at the 27th minute.
“Mighty Mouse” netted his second score off of a rebound of his own penalty kick.
The ball was stopped by Mililani goalie Chris Burt, but he couldn’t control the ball, which made its way through the goal at the 46th minute.
Mililani didn’t quit and showed why they were the 4-time defending champs, by answering a few minutes later, as Cheyne Eugenio scored at the 51st minute. But the KIF champions, who haven’t lost a game so far this season, found a way to get past the Trojan ‘tender.
Senior forward Josh Cabral slapped home Waimea’s third goal of the game, just a minute after Mililani’s first score.
The Trojans added another goal at the 63rd minute, as Todd Sorbin headed in a throw-in by Eugenio from the penalty kick area. The Menehune and goalie Justin Estes shut the Trojans down the rest of the way. According to HHSAA officials, Waimea showed speed, quickness, and agility. Also, they mentioned that Estes was calm, cool, and demonstrated great hang time and distance on kicks. Estes picked up one save and Mililani’s Burt came way with three saves.
Both teams managed five total shots, but Waimea topped the Trojans in goal kicks, 8-4, despite being called for 12 fouls, compared to Mililani’s four fouls. Waimea now goes on to the state semifinals and will face Kamehameha-O‘ahu, who took out the State’s fourth seed, Hawai‘i Prep, 2-1.
The semifinal match will commence tonight at 6 p.m. In the other semifinal, Iolani will battle the winner of the King Kekaulike/Kealakehe match. If Waimea wins its semifinal match, then they will move on to the state title game on Saturday at 8 p.m.
