Super Bowl memories
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
As promised, here are just some of the Superbowl favorites, sent in by you. Thanks for shar ing your stories and have fun watching the Patriots destroy the Eagles!
Vernon Suguitan, Lihu‘e
My favorite Superbowl memory would have to be when I was still in high school.
“I remember my family coming over and bringing all of my favorite foods. It was a fun time because I knew that I would be enjoying my favorite foods for a long time, well at least until next week, because everyone brought so much that there were so many leftovers.
The game was also exciting, I believe it was Superbowl XXX, where my favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys faced off against Pittsburgh.
The Cowboys won and I remember my dad painting his face silver after the game. Maybe he had too much to drink, but he promised me that he’d do something funny, if Dallas won, but I didn’t know he’d go that far.
But ever since that time, my dad and I have become really close, so that’s why I think Superbowl XXX is by far my favorite one.”
Pat Lanning, San Francisco
“Superbowl XXXVI is the one I will remember the most and I think everyone will share the same sentiments as I do for this one. It was the one right after the September 11 tragic events and I thought it was interesting that a team by the name of the Patriots overcame a huge obstacle and won the Superbowl in dramatic fashion.
I also thought the halftime show with the band U2 and the names flashing on the backdrop of the victims of 9/11 were very touching.
My cousin was in one of the twin towers and if there’s something that makes me think about him the most, it was seeing his name flashing down that screen on the biggest stage in the world.”
Sandy Jorgenson, O‘ahu
“What would a Superbowl be without great halftimes or commercials? Well, last year’s game between the Patriots and Panthers was my favorite and not because of Janet Jackson or the influx of erectile dysfunction commercials, but the game kept me on the edge of my seat.
I was rooting for the Panthers because no one thought they would win, kinda like this year, where no one thinks that the Eagles will win.
But I do think that last year’s Superbowl was overshadowed by the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction, which is sad, because it was one of the best Superbowls of all time, let’s hope it doesn’t happen again this time.”
Kenneth Blankenship, Kapa‘a
“The third times a charm! Superbowl III is my greatest memory and it probably is because I was actually there on the sidelines as a security guard.
Not only did “Broadway” Joe Namath predict a win against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, they dominated them and Namath was inked a hero by many. I remember after the game being rambled over by fans, but when I looked up, it was actually Namath himself, but to my surprise, he picked me up and said, “You alright?” I was so shocked that no words came out of my mouth.
That was my first and last Superbowl, but at least I can say that “Broadway” Joe ran me over.”
Once again thanks to all of you out there for sending in your favorite Superbowl memories. Hopefully you’ll make new ones today in Superbowl XXXIX!
