You can tell her anything you want, but don’t tell her to not go surfing.
16yearold Andrianna Mendivil has been hooked on surfing since the age of 12 and has been ripping it up ever since.
“I surf because I live on an island and it’s a lot of fun,” Mendivil said.
Born and raised in “God’s Country,” also called Kalaheo, Mendivil glided into the ocean, with the influence from her father, John, who still surfs into his 60s.
“He (dad) refuses to surf on a longboard because he thinks that only old guys use longboards, so he still uses a short board,” the younger Mendivil said of her father.
Mendivil enjoys the waters at PK’s (Prince Kuhio’s in Po‘ipu) and surfs mostly on the westside, since she lives closer to that area.
As 13yearold, she entered contests here on Kaua‘i and all over the state. Mendivil participates in the NSSA and HSF events and usually performs well in most of her contests.
“At first, I just made it to the finals, but I’ve been getting better, it felt really good to win a HASA state championship,” the Roxy and Xcel sponsored surfer said.
The junior at Kaua‘i High School hopes to become a doctor one day and wants to go to college in Australia after she graduates high school.
Her ultimate dream though, just like any young surfer is to make it to the professional ranks, like Kaua‘i’s Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly.
With surfing on the brink of becoming a high school sport, Mendivil drools at the idea of possibly surfing for Kaua‘i High School.
“I support the idea 100and I think it’s a great activity for us,” Mendivil said.
