score wasn’t even close at the midway juncture of the game, as the Red Raiders played their best in a crucial second round win, 67-39, over Waimea last night at the Raiderdome.
Tavana, who still suffers from a calf injury, put forth his best performance of the season with 29 points.
“Yeah, I would definitely say that this was the best game for me this year, but the whole team played well too,” the soft-spo-ken Tavana said. The Barba-less Menehune squad were rudely awakened by Tavana from the start, as he poured in points from all over the court, including his first three-point bucket of the season.
“My calf felt good tonight, but I’m it’s not 100yet, but I’m pret-ty happy with the way we played tonight,” Tavana said.
The Red Raiders climbed out of the gates with a 35-18 first half lead and increased the margin with an 8-0 run to start the second half. Led by Tavana, Jeremy Man-uel, and Kekoa Crowell, Kaua‘i didn’t allow the Menehune back into the game.
Waimea’s Calsen Agrade stopped the bleeding and the Red Raider run with a put back and a three-point bomb, but Kaua‘i was still up big, 45-23 with two minutes to go in the third period. At the start of the fourth, the Red Raid-ers led 49-25. Tavana’s trifecta came with 5:15 on the clock, which gave Kaua‘i the 57-30 advantage.
The first round champs cruised the rest of the way for the 67-39 victory, which gave them a 2-0 second round record.
Besides Tavana’s 29, Garrett Sakimae and Crowell netted 10 points each for the Red Raiders. Manuel punched in eight points.
Agrade led the Menehune in the scoring department with 12 points, followed by Brendan Mc-Daniels with eight, and Aaron Hesapene with six.
The Red Raider JV squad out-hustled Waimea, 43-34.
Both teams fought back and forth from the start, but Kaua‘i pulled away at the end of the third period, as Kaua‘i’s Tyrus Ceria-Lux’s runner gave the Red Raiders a 30-25 lead. Bradley Semana connected with Devin Tavana, which gave Kaua‘i the 34-28 advantage with six minutes to go, but Vincent Geronimo’s put back off Daniel Lizama’s missed free-throw, inched Waimea closer, 36-31 with just under two minutes to play. Ceria-Lux led all scorers with 18 points and Basil Walton contributed with nine markers for the Red Raiders. Geronimo’s 12 points led the Menehune and Roldan Villanueva added seven.
