Less than two weeks to go!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
We still have a lot of time to prepare for the Superbowl because it’s over a week away, so this weekend, minus football can be spent at KIF sporting events.
KIF canoe paddling starts off the Saturday sports calendar at 9 a.m. with another race. Will Kaua‘i High School continue its hot streak?
Led by Danielle Davis, the Red Raider girls’ squad seems tough to beat, but Waimea and Island School aren’t far behind.
You can catch the races at Wailua River, but get there early because parking will be tough to come by if you’re not there on time.
Just about an hour later at 10 a.m., KIF swimming gets underway at Kaua‘i High School’s pool. Will Ben Baldwin, Jarred Perry, and Keenan Anaya continue to add more state qualifying events to their list?
Who will be the first girl to qualify for states?
My pick: Kula’s Wailana Waite!
Over in Hanapepe, the West Kaua‘i Youth Baseball League is having a drug awareness clinic for its youngsters.
The event starts at 9 a.m. at the Hanapepe Armory.
We need more of these types of clinics, especially for our youths and sports is the ultimate defense against drugs and alcohol.
Paul Pancho, president of the West Kaua‘i Youth Baseball League is the contact person for the clinic if you’re interested (335-4438).
West Kaua‘i Pinto games will follow the clinic.
In Kapa‘a, the youth baseball continues, as the 2005 Kawaihau Little League Minors season kicks off at Kapa‘a Ballpark.
Between games, the group will hold an opening ceremony, which should start around 11:30 a.m.
The food booth at Kapa‘a will be in full force, so keep them in mind at lunchtime and you’ll surely see the Aiwohi family at this great event.
From the young to the young at heart, the Kaua‘i Senior Citizen Softball League has another set of games on tap this weekend, after a spectacular opening ceremony in Lihu‘e last Saturday.
The games are in ‘Ele‘ele on Saturday.
There are five games on the schedule, starting at 9 a.m. with the last game commencing at 2 p.m. Thanks to Richard Carveiro for getting me a schedule. Carveiro is a West Kaua‘i trooper, who just keeps on ticking, but according to him, it’s his wife, Lydia who keeps the motor running!
Nelson Mendonca, the main man for the league and the rest of the crew are an entertaining gang to watch.
If you want to see competitive, light-hearted action, that will give you a smile, then catch one of their games.
Also in Hanapepe, it’s the biggest game on the soccer schedule this season.
The Kapa‘a girls can wrap up the KIF title with a win against the Waimea Menehune.
But if the Warriors tie or lose to Waimea, the Red Raiders, who will definitely be in attendance, will once again reign as KIF champs. The Menehune boys have already wrapped up the KIF boys soccer title, thanks to great all-around play from each individual on their squad, led by Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson, whose legs move about a 100 mph. Congratulations to coach Kennett, his coaching staff and the Menehune boys!
So there you have it, more than enough sporting events to take your mind off of no NFL games this weekend. Besides, we all need a week off to prepare for the biggest event of the season: The Superbowl!
