The sixth National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) competition of 2004-05 was held recently in varying conditions at Banyans on the Big Island.
Over the January 15-16 weekend, the top surfers from all the islands surfed conditions that varied from small to 4-6 foot blown-out surf.
Alana Blanchard had a double win in the Women’s and Girls’ Explorer division. Bethany Hamilton followed close behind placing 2nd in the Explorer Women’s.
Andreanna Mendevil placed first in the Open Women’s division. Other finalists included Leila Hurst and Malia Manuel.
Koa Smith had another successful weekend placing first in Open Mini Groms and a 2nd in Explorer Menehune.
Travis Smith won the Bodyboarding division. Other finalists from Kaua‘i included Kyle Galtes, Kaikea Elias, Alex Smith, Bear Baily, Zach Arreola, Kyle Ramey and Kalani Martin.
All of the surfers must surf four out of eight of the competitions, their best four scores will decide who will participate at the Regional competition, held on Kaua‘i in March. The top surfers after Regionals will go on to compete in Nationals at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California in June.
The 7th NSSA contest is scheduled for February 5 and 6 at Haleiwa on the North Shore of O‘ahu.
