UTEP outlasts Hawai‘i, 71-70

The UH men’s basketball team fell to UTEP, 71-70 yesterday at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. UH drops to 10-4 overall, 2-4 WAC and UTEP improves its record to 15-3 overall, 5-1 WAC. UH’s Jake Sottos led all scorers with 20 points. Julian Sensley helped out with 12 points and 10 boards. UH plays Boise St. on Saturday, 2 p.m., Hawai‘i time.
Koloa Canoe Club recruitment
KOCC is recruiting new members — you don’t need to be experienced at paddling or even own your own paddle. Strength and a proficiency in the ocean are a plus, but if you don’t have that now, and you train with us, you’ll develop it!
Six-man outrigger canoe practice will begin Jan. 25. The paddling season runs through Sept. and membership cost is $100 for the entire year. Practices run every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. Men and women practice at the same time. For more information, call Fran at 332-5262 or 635-0165.
Niumalu Canoe Club practices
The legendary Niumalu Canoe Club will be having its first practice on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Kalapaki Beach, across from Duke’s. Men, women, new and experienced are invited to participate in the Hawaiian sport of canoe paddling. For more information, call 651-7298.
Kaiola Canoe Club practices
Kaiola Canoe Club in Niumalu has begun practice for the 2005 canoe paddling season, and welcomes new paddlers.
The club halau is next to Niumalu Park. No previous paddling experience is necessary. The men’s program trains from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The women’s program trains from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Hawaiian sport of outrigger canoe paddling involves training in Hawaiian traditions, fitness, teamwork and much more. An active racing program includes both long-distance and sprint events. Roll into the YMCA for roller hockey
The YMCA of Kaua‘i Roller Hockey League announces start of registration for the upcoming 2005 season. Boys and girls ages 6 to 17 are welcome to participate, with or without experience. Games will be held at the rink at the County of Kaua‘i Kapa‘a Ballpark. Registration is $40. Call 245-3358 for information and a registration form.
UH sweeps Northridge
HONOLULU — Matt Bender and Pedro Azenha buried 13 kills each as the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team swept Cal State-Northridge 30-23, 31-29, 30-19 Wednesday night in the Warriors’ first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season. UH capitalized on eight Matador service errors to take the first game, despite hitting only .259 in the set. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead heading to the locker rooms. Bender led the way in the second game with seven kills and an ace, while the Matadors racked up another eight service errors.
The Warriors improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The Matadors dropped to 3-3 and 1-2.
