Asashoryu remains undefeated
TOKYO — Grand champion Asashoryu outmuscled Iwakiyama Monday to maintain a flawless record and a two-win lead at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.
Fighting in the day’s final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Mongolian Asashoryu improved to a perfect 9-0 when he bulldozed top-maegashira Iwakiyama out of the ring after taking a firm left-hand grip and butting his opponent out with his head. Iwakiyama fell 5-4.
Trailing at two wins off the leader are Asashoryu’s compatriot Hakuho, a komusubi, and sekiwake Tochiazuma.
Hakuho shoved out ozeki Chiyotaikai after absorbing a series of fierce arm thrusts from the outset to improve to 7-2.
Chiyotaikai, who will need a winning record in this tourney to maintain his ozeki status, dropped to 5-4.
