The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders, 3-0 after their Friday night win in Kapa‘a, can clinch the KIF first round title with a win over Waimea tonight as they host the Menehune at the Raiderdome.
Also on the line is the Red Raider JV squad (2-1) who will attempt to redeem themselves after dropping a 52-47 loss to Waimea, Jan. 8.
The Junior Raiders held a 15-point halftime lead only to see the Junior Menehune battle back and capitalize on missed Kaua‘i free throws, and an untimely turnover close to the end of the contest.
With the Junior Menehune seeking to pick up their third win of the season, the contest is sure to be a nail-biter to the end.
Kaua‘i’s varsity squad comes off an impressive 64-45 win over Kapa‘a, Friday night, but are no shoo-in for a victory as the Menehune are aware of what is at stake, the coaching staff being on hand at the Bernice Hundley.
They were witness to how Kaua‘i started without the services of Va‘afuti Tavana, their leading scorer, and key inside player.
Tavana was nursing a leg injury, and despite being inserted midway through the second period, was hobbled by the injury throughout the night as he was seen massaging the tender leg on the court.
Garrett Sakimae was called on to fill the void, and with step-up play from Kekoa Crowell, Jeremy Manuel, and Josh Bradbury, the Raiders finished with four players in double-digit scoring, Manuel leading the pack with 16 points in the win.
The Menehune (1-1) played tough against the Warriors after being manhandled by the Raiders in their opener at home.
Tipoff for the varsity game is 20 minutes following the completion of the JV contest that tips off at 5:30 p.m., and there’s no radio!
