LIHU‘E — Even if it didn’t translate into a win, the Menehune girls varsity soccer squad earned a moral victory, by tying the Warriors, 2-2 last night at Vidinha Stadium. With the tie, Waimea took home its first point of the season.
The loss for the Warriors could come back to haunt them in the end, but with the tie, they moved a point ahead of the Red Raiders in the KIF girls soccer standings.
Kapa‘a’s Rancee Wilson brought her “A” game with two goals on the night, the first one sailed right over the outstretched arms of Waimea goalie Karmn Rivel at the 16th minute in the first half and the other score came in the 5th minute of the second half. The Menehune relied on Chasen “Shorty” Sherman, who moves about 40 mph. Her goal came in the 40th minute of the first half, amongst a crowd of players in front of the Kapa‘a goal.
Waimea’s Tori Kagawa stepped up with a nice free kick from the corner, which tied the score up at 2-2 in the 16th minute of the second half. Kapa‘a put the pressure on, but the Menehune defense, along with Rivel managed to stave off the Warrior attempts for the 2-2 score.
Earlier in the evening, the Menehune boys nearly gave the game away to the Warriors, who scored three goals in the last five minutes, but Waimea held on to the 4-3 win. The Warriors nearly tied things up with another goal, but it was nullified by the officials. Kapa‘a’s Micah Ohlen got his five minutes of fame with three consecutive goals, one in the 35th minute, another in the 38th minute on a penalty kick, and the last one in the 40th minute.
The Menehune supplied the fireworks early on with four first-half sparks. Scott Martin netted the first score in the 5th minute and five minutes later, teammate Jeffrey Kakuda mad the score, 2-0 in favor of the Menehune.
Waimea’s Kollin Morikawa and Kakuda played tough defense throughout the first half, keeping the Warrior offensive attack at bay.
With 17 minutes off the clock, Waimea’s Josh Cabral slapped a goal into the net for the 3-0 advantage. Kapa‘a’s Jonathan Moeller got close, but his shot on goal just before the half went right into the hands of the Waimea goalie.
The Menehune struck one more time before the half, thanks to David Honma’s score in the 44th minute, which gave Waimea the 4-0 lead going into the locker room.
Both teams clamped down on defense during the early parts of the second half, but the fireworks started up again, but this time, the Warriors supplied the ammunition, with Ohlen letting his leg take over the match with three goals in five minutes, but it wasn’t enough, as the Menehune took the 4-3 victory. With the win, Waimea now moves six points ahead of the Red Raiders in the KIF boys soccer race.
