With the win, the Menehune moved into a first-place tie with the Red Raiders in the second round.
Waimea pitcher Sy Sagawa kept Warrior batters off the bases early on, with help from the defense behind her.
On the other side, Kapa‘a pitcher Stephanie Kawamura had a tough time with control and walked in the first run of the game.
Moani Durant came home on an error and Sagawa’s RBI single, scoring Kodi Oyama made the tally, 3-0 in favor of the Menehune. Kanoe Carveiro ended the Waimea first inning by scoring on a Kapa‘a error for the 4-0 advantage.
In the third, Tatum Gonsalves added to the Waimea total by scoring on another Warrior error to make it 5-0.
Then in the fifth inning, Waimea’s Daelene Perreira scored on a fielder’s choice, Kanani Mata ripped an RBI single, scoring Carveiro, and Gonsalves crossed the plate on an error, which made the score, 8-0.
Kapa‘a pitcher Hanalei Gomes came in for relief of Kawamura, but things stayed the same, as Waimea finished off the Warriors with two more runs to end the game on the 10-run rule. Cheri Kua and Mata scored the final two runs for the Menehune.
KIF softball continues on Saturday with Kapa‘a traveling to Isenberg Field to face the Red Raiders in doubleheader action, that starts at 10 a.m.
