HILO — With his parents in the stands, University of Hawaii at Hilo Basketball Coach Jeff Law posted his 100th career victory with a 95-80 win over Western New Mexico University. Law began his UHH tenure with the 1998-99 season. Prior to his arrival, the program had one winning record over 12 seasons. After two years, the program posted a five-year string of winning seasons. At the end of the 2002-03 regular season, he became the first UH Hilo basketball coach to take a team to an NCAA Regional. During his tenure, 14 players have earned all-conference recognition.
That season set the standards for the program. UH Hilo finished the season 18-10, second in the Pacific West Conference, ranked sixth in the Region and earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional. Off to the program’s best start at 13-1, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo basketball team has broken new ground as they are ranked 25th in this week’s NABC/Division II Men’s Basketball Poll. This is the first time since joining the NCAA in 1994-95 season that the Vulcans have broken into the poll. The Vulcans (13-1 overall, 1-1 Pacific West Conference) are back on the court tonight against Montana State University.
