The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the county Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Physical equipment would help Keoki
Keoki is a 12-year-old, mentally challenged boy with autism. His life has been full of challenges lately, as he is starting to become more physical, making it more difficult for his single mother to accommodate him. Keoki would really benefit from some physical equipment, and his mom could use some cheer, too.
Gift certificates would brighten holidays
Mary Smith is a 39-year-old, married, professional woman with a teenage son. Everything in Mary’s life was picture perfect until her husband, Mark, was diagnosed with cancer. Mark’s treatment was long and hard, often leaving him so ill that he was unable to care for himself. Eventually, Mary had to quit work to care for Mark, until he died. Mary continues to struggle with finances, as their resources have been depleted. Any gift certificates would brighten their holidays and their spirits.
Mom, daughter have little money
Angel is a 35-year-old single mom who has spent her life working hard to make life for those around her easier. Because of her deep commitment to others, it seemed natural for Angel to take on the responsibility of caring for her dying father, honoring his wish to be at home. His care was intense, and required her to tend to his needs round the clock. Though her employer was supportive and allowed her to take the necessary time off, it was without pay. Bills went unpaid, and they managed on very little money, with none left over for little treats. Angel has since returned to work, but her minimum-wage job does not offer her the opportunity to catch up financially. Any gifts or certificates for Angel and her 4-year-old daughter would help give them an extra special Christmas.
Donations may be mailed to the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa‘a, HI 96746. For more information, please contact Dimples Kano at 822-9882.
