Yesterday would have been Carl Gaber’s 57th birthday.
Instead, the Ha‘ena resident and electrical contractor may be Kaua‘i’s 11th drowning victim of the year.
Gaber, the owner of Tradewind Electric, was bodysurfing Friday in Hanalei Bay, between Pine Trees and the Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park areas, before he was pulled out of the water by lifeguards, friends said.
The man was brought to shore about 4:30 p.m., and was tended to by emergency medical personnel who had administered medication and attempted to revive him, according to a report on the Kaua‘i Police Department’s scanner radio band.
An American Medical Response ambulance transported Gaber to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, county officials said.
There were eight drowning victims in both 2002 and 2003. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
