The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the county Agency on Elderly Affairs, seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Donations: Checks may be mailed to the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. Please contact Dimples Kano, 822-9882, for more information.
Single mom could use clothing, furniture, food
Juwanna is a single mother of a three-year-old named Ashley. She recently obtained housing for herself and her daughter. Juwanna works full time and pays all her bills from her paycheck, but this doesn’t leave her much for anything else. A gift of clothing, furniture or food would be welcomed.
Bedrails will keep Mr. Mapuna safe in his bed, and prevent injury
Mr. Mapuna has multiple medical problems including ulcers (sores — non-healing on both lower legs, and both of his knees are almost fused, or unable to bend). Mr. Mapuna has been falling from his bed, and frequently stays on the floor for hours as his wife is unable to lift him.
Mrs. Mapuna has her own set of multiple medical problems, and has recently been treated for severe back pain from lifting Mr. Mapuna.
Mr. Mapuna refuses to let neighbors or emergency crews assist him.
Bedrails that cost $110 each with an additional $30 shipping and handling will prevent him from falling off his bed, and ensure his safety as well as preserve his wife’s back.
They do not have the funds to purchase this equipment.
Lolly needs joy in her life
Lolly was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and has become very depressed about her condition.
Her confusion and loss of memory has been very difficult for her to accept, and has caused more strain with her daughter who lives with her.
They are on a very limited income, and are experiencing more financial debt because of her doctor’s visits and medication that she now needs to take.
A gift certificate for the holidays would bring her some joy.
