HANAPEPE — As the sun dropped low in the western sky, the clouds built up, and the rains came down as nightfall descended on Hanapepe Stadium.
But, from “Where the Sun Sets,” the theme for Waimea High School’s 2004 Homecoming celebration, the rain only served to settle the dust as the Menehune homecoming committee unveiled their revelry before a capacity crowd at Hanapepe Stadium.
Maj. Victor Aguilar, the ROTC rifle team and drum line whetted the audience’s appetite as they performed during the halftime of the JV game to set the stage for the celebration that unfolded during halftime of the varsity contest.
On hand to add even more zest to the numerous alumni that took part in the celebration were Miss Homecoming 2003, Fiana Moe, who returned home from Washington State to present the crown to this year’s queen, Jessica Jacinto.
Also on hand to help lead the “Alma Mater” with the current and past cheerleaders was recently crowned Mrs. United States, Mrs. Edrienne (Edwards) Carpenter.
Hosted by Brycen Hiraoka, the court was presented to the audience, each representative of the homecoming royalty being escorted by either their fathers or other relatives.
Joining the reign of queen Jacinto were Miss Victory Gina Fujimura, Miss Menehune Bree Fujita, Miss Football Jessica Rita, and Miss School Spirit Chantelle Briones.
Class representatives included Miss Sunni Acosta representing the Class of 2008, Miss Shantal Guirao representing the Class of 2007, Miss Natasha Acosta representing the Class of 2006, and Miss Tiara Kali representing the Class of 2005.
As the Kaua‘i All-Island Marching Band prepared to make their entry, the royalty was presented against a backdrop of a giant yellow ribbon symbolizing the support and remembrance of Kaua‘i’s Hawaii Army National Guard Company A, 2nd Battalion, 299th Infantry Regiment, personnel, and others about to be deployed to Iraq, and the traditional, big, blue “W” painted across the stadium’s 50-yard line.
