Peirsol breaks own world record in 200 backstroke
INDIANAPOLIS — Aaron Peirsol of the United States lowered his own world record in the 200-meter backstroke at the Short Course World Championships on Monday night.
Peirsol’s time of 1 minute, 50.52 seconds bettered his mark of 1:50.64 set in March at a short course World Cup meet in East Meadow, N.Y.
He also won the 100 back during the 25-meter competition.
Matthew Welsh of Australia was second in 1:52.54 and Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia was third in 1:54.20.
Peirsol, of Irvine, Calif., swept the backstroke events at the Athens Olympics.
He also won the 200 back at the 2002 short course championships.
Kaua‘i Polo Club meeting
The Kaua‘i Polo Club holds a meeting every first Sunday of each month.
On the agenda are fundraising, sponsorships, recruitment of players and officials, procedures, security, parking, logo shop matters, and volunteer programs.

Officials’ meeting
Anyone interested in becoming an official, or those who want to get back into officiating, are invited to attendan officials’ meeting, held every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
Chad Owens one of WAC football players of the week
DENVER – Chad Owens, University of Hawai‘i punt returner was named the Western Athletic Conference special teams player of the week, joining Rice fullback Ed Bailey and UTEP linebacker Robert Rodriguez who were named as offensive and defensive players of the week.
Owens, a senior from Honolulu, returned three punts for 80 yards including one for 75 yards and a TD in their 48-26 win against Nevada. The TD came in the third quarter with UH leading 27-13.
Bailey, a senior from Klein, Texas, rushed for 158 yards and four TDs on 24 carries in the Owls’ 44-10 win against SMU.
Rodriguez, a senior from El Paso, Texas had a game-high 11 tackles, including one for a loss of three yards, and an interception in the 24-21 win against Fresno State.
Other Hawai‘i players that were nominated included senior running back Michael Brewster for offensive honors, and junior linebacker Tanuvasa Moe.
