LIHU‘E — Coach Mike Tresler and the Kaua‘i High School defense answered the challenge and took it to Waimea en route to a 20-8 win last night in front of a packed house at Vidinha Stadium.
Defense wasn’t the only thing Kaua‘i did well, as the offensive side flourished as well, thanks to the Kekoa Crowell to Cadiente and Jasper combinations, which led to toucdown bombs of 68 and 76 yards.
Both teams, however, couldn’t find any type of rhythm in the first quarter, as the goose eggs remained on the scoreboard after the first period.
Waimea’s Aina Emayo intercepted a Crowell pass early in the second to give the Menehune good field position, but Kaua‘i’s Stanton Yoshimori stunted the drive with a huge sack of quarterback Max Hadwin.
Then the first bomb fell, as Crowell connected with Cadiente for the 68 yard TD, in which Cadiente acted as a pinball and dodged three Menehune defenders to put the Red Raiders up 6-0.
A late second quarter field goal attempt by Justin Estes of Waimea was blocked, so the halftime score remained with Kaua‘i up 6-0. Early in the third, Crowell found Jasper, who nudged off a Waimea defender for the 76 yard score, as Raymond Jerves nailed the PAT for the 13-0 lead.
The huge defensive play came with 1:45 to go in the third as Kaua‘i’s defense stopped Waimea on four downs at the one yard line.
But Waimea’s Dawa Bunao tackled Crowell in the endzone for the safety to give Waimea the two points, 13-2. In the fourth, both teams were unable to put points on the board, right up until the end, as Kaua‘i’s Crowell teamed up with Niko Elvenia for a one yard TD play to put Kaua‘i up, 20-2. With 53 seconds to go, Hadwin connected to Oroc for a 12 yard score to make it 20-8 in favor of Kaua‘i.
Extra Points
Kaua‘i High School girls volleyballers were catching the game while playing in the band: Megan Vento, Auika Muragin, Kara Schumacher, Ligaya Malones, Trisha Niau, and Erin Fabro. Erin’s and Trisha’s parents (Mike and Myra Niau, Bo and Emily Fabro) also were on hand watching big red. The Fabro’s brought Kira, the KIF dog, who has been to more KIF games than most people (But lucky she isn’t black, huh Emily?) Peter Rayno, who was wearing a championship Detroit Pistons hat (Peter’s a Lakers Fan, what’s up with that Pete?) but it was a gift, at least that’s what he said. Kathy Carveiro brought a friend along with her, Terry Ferreira, whose daughter Taylor is a Kaua‘i cheerleader. Kathy and Terry used to cheer together a long time ago at Kaua‘i and Kathy of course brought some tasty musubi!
Last but certainly not least, Jimmy Jasper made sure he had a fresh pair of socks for his son Jett (Great game, Jett), who refuses to use the same pair of socks for the entire game, so the exchange is made at halftime!
