Whew, dodged a big bullet!
By Duane Shimogawa – The Garden Island
This Thursday was a big day for my family, especially for my mom, who flew to O‘ahu to find out if there was any blockage in her heart’s valves.
Luckily though, the Thursday morning procedure came up negative and boy did we miss a bullet.
My sister called me yesterday to let me know that everything was ‘OK!
What a relief and this was just after I found out last week Thursday that Chad Gummerus’ mom (Priscilla Gummerus) had just passed away after a long battle with cancer.
My mom (Cynthia) was born with heart trouble, where taking pills was a part of the daily routine for her.
I realized after she told me about her recent situation, that nothing lasts forever and that she’s going to pass away someday.
To compound it, to have a close friend lose his mom, brought the feeling a lot closer to home. I’ve been very lucky so far and if my luck runs out, I know that it’s just a part of life that we all have to deal with.
What made it more ironic was seeing Chad yesterday at the Kaua‘i Athletic Club. It was if it was a reminder about my own mom’s well-being. So my sister’s call just a few minutes later was well-timed.
Even Teddy Higashi, a friend and regular visitor of the Kaua‘i Athletic Club, didn’t really know what to say when Chad approached us.
He said that he really didn’t know what to say or if saying anything about his mom’s passing would be the right thing to do.
You can say sorry or anything else, but I think that just acting the way you did before the incident is the best way to approach the situation.
My mom’s angiogram procedure frightened her and the doctors offered to do it a month from now, but she didn’t want to fret over the whole situation and decided to get it over with, so she could stop worrying.
Not a lot of things make this tough woman scared, so it woke me up and made me realize that this was a big step for her. She’s been through a lot, so I think that this obstacle was just another way of making her stronger.
If there’s anything I learned from this situation, it’s to cherish every moment I have with not only my mom, but with my entire family, and even friends, because you never know when things might change. In addition, my new motto is to live every day as if it’s my last.
Packers sign Millhouse to practice squad
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers on Thursday signed former Hawaii cornerback Kelvin Millhouse to their practice squad. Millhouse was a non-drafted free agent who spent four months with Miami before the Dolphins cut him on August 30th. Last year, Millhouse had 53 tackles and four interceptions for the Warriors.
Braves 4, Astros 2, 11 innings
ATLANTA — With plenty of incentive, Rafael Furcal made sure the Atlanta Braves’ season lasts at least two more games.
Set to report to jail once the postseason ends, Furcal hit a two-out, two-run homer in the 11th inning that sent the Braves over the Houston Astros 4-2 Thursday and tied their NL playoff series at one game each. With Houston on the verge of a commanding lead, the Braves rallied from a late two-run deficit to force extra innings. Both teams went to extraordinary means — the Astros looking to go two-up in the best-of-five series, the Braves realizing they needed a split.
