If Kaua‘i plans to move into the first-place slot in KIF football, then they’ll have to get defensive against Waimea. The Menehune running game was the key the last time these two teams met. Waimea amassed over 250 yards on the ground, compared to Kaua‘i’s 23 yards at Hanapepe Stadium.
With Kenny Estes still out of action due to an injury, the Menehune ground game shouldn’t lose a step with Jon-Anthony Reyes and Aina Emayo, who both combined for nearly 150 yards in the 21-13 Waimea win.
In the air, Kaua‘i’s Kekoa Crowell and wide receiver Kevin Cadiente teamed up for 112 yards. Crowell though, threw three INT’s, while Menehune snapper Max Hadwin committed no INT’s. The Raiders will have to muster up some type of running game and at the same time, put a stop or try to slow down the Menehune runners.
Special teams might also come into play as a factor for both squads, as Kaua‘i’s miscue on a PAT proved to be the main difference in the previous match-up, with Kaua‘i kicker, Frank Speetjens missing the PAT during the latter part of the third quarter, which would’ve tied the game up at 14-14. Will Kaua‘i’s defense show up tonight or will Waimea make another giant step towards regaining the KIF football crown? You can find out for yourself at Vidinha Stadium, 7:35 p.m.
