Members of the Kapa‘a High School Class of 1962 celebrated their 60th birthdays recently. Classmates gathered at the home of Loretta (Farias) and Jim Geis for a casual, talk-story evening.
“Great food, music and a few games made it a great evening,” classmates said.
That same weekend, the class held a lu‘au at the Kapa‘a Elementary School cafeteria.
“Classmates and guests along with eight teachers and staff from our senior year had a great time reminiscing 42 years ago,” organizers wrote.
Those who attended included Evelyn Brand, cafeteria manager; Teruko Nagahisa, cafeteria staffer; Alice Yamada, office clerk; Henry Hashimoto, counselor; Bob LaMadrid, a first-year teacher in 1962; coach Warren Mizutani; Ted Nishijo, who came from Honolulu; and Edith Ushio, science teacher.
The final day of the reunion was held at Lydgate Park pavilion, and in “true honor of our armed forces and military, we had red, white and blue decorations, honored our veterans, sang, and had more food than we could consume,” organizers said. The event was also a celebration of Olinda Kaneholani Higashi’s 60th birthday. Classmates traveled from Virginia, Tennessee, Idaho, Colorado and California, and some traveled from Honolulu and Kaua‘i.
Also recently, members of the Class of 1962 presented a check to Kapa‘a High School for a scoreboard at the Ron Martin Athletic Field where the Warriors’ home baseball games are played, as well as some tables and benches on campus.
Arlene Okimoto, vice president of the Class of 1962, made the presentation to Gilmore Youn, current principal of Kapa‘a High.
