It was a blue, white, and red flash that crossed the finish line at the KIF’s cross-country opener at Kula School on Saturday.
Waimea’s Scott Martin, one-third of the Martin triplets, blistered the 3-mile course with a time of 18:36, followed by teammate and twin, Nathan Martin, who posted a 20:11.
Kaua‘i’s Chelsea Smith-Wishard beat out the other Martin triplet, Rachael to win the girls race with a 22:04.
Martin finished 50 seconds behind the Red Raider at 22:54.
Overall, the Island School boys, led by Chris Marsh’s third-place time of 20:34 and Brian O’Brien’s fifth-place finish at 21:17 were good enough for the title. Kaua‘i finished second, headed by Chad Naganuma (21:01) and Chad Nonaka (22:25).
Waimea, Kapa‘a, and Kula rounded out the last three slots. Adam Kurlin (24:22) was the top Warrior runner and Lucas Farley (22:10) was the first athlete at the finish line for Kula.
Farley was the seventh boys runner to cross the line.
The Kapa‘a girls took the team title with help from Alex Pond (24:03) and Erin Pickett (25:27).
Pond and Pickett finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Kaua‘i finished close behind the Warriors with good times from Caitlin Towner (25:40) and Smith-Wishard.
Waimea, Island, and Kula rounded out the field. Leilani Carvalho (25:33) was Island School’s top runner and G. Pickett (23:59) topped the Kula crew.
The OIA State Invitational on O‘ahu is set for this Saturday and the next Quad meet is at KCC, hosted by Kaua‘i on Oct. 9.
