WAIMEA — Sometimes coming home just feels right and for the Waimea boys varsity volleyball squad the right feeling was getting their very first win of the KIF season against Kapa‘a yesterday at the friendly confines of the Clem Gomes Gymnasium.
The Menehune took care of Kapa‘a in straight sets, 25-16, 25-21.
Waimea’s Timmy Mattos got things started with a kill to propel the Menehune to a 3-0 lead in the first set.
Waimea never trailed after that point, as Bryan Hayashi caught fire by putting down kill after kill to lengthen the Menehune lead.
Josh Cabral and Chris Aguilar also gave the Menehune offensive gas for the easy initial set win. Kapa‘a’s Alika Woodward, Kiah Imai, and Daniel Rodrick were the leaders in the kill department for the Warriors in the first set.
A Mattos ace ended it in the first in favor of Waimea, 25-16.
Kapa‘a turned it up a bit in the second set, but was unable to stop Cabral and the Menehune attack, who were determined to gather their first win of the season.
The Mattos and Cabral combination proved to be deadly for Kapa‘a, as both were dominant at the net.
Aguilar’s two straight kills gave Waimea the 12-9 advantage early, but it wasn’t until Mattos’ two straight bombs that put the Warriors away for good in the second set. Hayashi nailed a kill to end it for the Menehune who took the second stanza, 25-21.
In JV boys action, Chris Newcomb, Markland Soliva, Calsen Agrade, and Alton Shimatsu all came up big for Waimea, who defeated Kapa‘a in two sets, 25-13, 25-15.
KIF volleyball takes a week off in between the two rounds, with the action starting up again on Oct. 6 with Kaua‘i traveling to Kapa‘a.
