WAIMEA — The Christmas present might’ve gotten to the Kaua‘i High School girls varsity volleyball team early, but it was definitely welcomed, as the girls in green played Santa and delivered a first round title to the Red Raiders last night at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium.
Not to be overshadowed though, are the Kapa‘a girls, who played almost flawlessly to upend Waimea, 25-19, 25-19. The Menehune entered the game with a shot at sharing the first round title, causing a first round playoff match-up with Kaua‘i, if they defeated the Warriors.
Kapa‘a’s Jennifer Lindsey set the pace early for her team with two big kills and Amniesty Ragsac followed suit to give the Warriors the early advantage at 10-7.
Warrior setter Joliann Arzadon played part-time outside hitter and slammed down three big kills to keep Kapa‘a in the lead.
Waimea’s Nue Wong kept things close for the Menehune, as she pounded down three kills in the first set, but Waimea sealed its own fate by committing numerous unforced errors.
A Brianne States and Arzadon double-block ended it in the first set in favor of Kapa‘a, 25-19.
Lindsey and Wong dueled in the second set by matching kill for kill. A Britney Carvalho ace knotted the game up at six a piece, but Wong slammed down a kill to give Waimea its first lead of the match at 8-7, which would be the last time the Menehune held the advantage.
Arzadon and Ragsac helped out with a roof and a kill to keep Waimea within just four points. Lindsey also grabbed the spotlight by slapping a kill down to the hardwood to give Kapa‘a a 19-13 lead.
Kapa‘a then committed its own share of unforced errors to let the Menehune creep back into the contest.
With the score at 24-19, Arzadon shot one down the right side to win the match for the Warriors, 25-19.
The next KIF volleyball match happens on October 6 with Kaua‘i facing Kapa‘a at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium. JV start time is 3 p.m., with varsity action following the two JV contests.
Kaua‘i High School’s boys and girls squads both took the first round titles.
