The most obvious question looming in the balance for tonight’s Waimea, Kapa‘a game is if the Kapa‘a defense can stop the potent ground game of the Menehune.
However, Waimea will be without its most effective horse in Kenny Estes, who ran for 104 yards on 15 carries, averaging almost seven yards per touch, against Kaua‘i last Friday. The senior suffered a broken collar bone injury that should keep him out for about four weeks.
Bad news for Waimea? Well, if you’re head coach Liko Perreira, well, the news doesn’t seem so bad, as runningbacks Jon-Anthony Reyes and Aina Emayo ran for 76 and 68 yards respectively last week against the Red Raiders.
“Reyes and Emayo are tough and let’s not forget Max Hadwin, who’s a great player, so coach Liko has an array of talent at his disposal,” Kapa‘a head coach Wes Kaui said. The duo kept the Waimea ground game going, which gave Kaua‘i trouble in their 21-13 win at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Menehune travel to Vidinha Stadium for the first time this season and if they accumulate chunks of yardage at the beginning of the contest, Kapa‘a could be in for a long night.
“We just need to cut down on our penalties and mental mistakes and if we do that, we should be fine,” Kaui said.
Game time is 5 p.m. for the JV and 7:35 p.m. for the varsity.
