The Garden Island’s “Gridiron Challenge”
Week #3, Prep: Waimea/Kapa‘a, St. Louis/Kamehameha.
College: Iowa/Michigan, Penn St./Wisconsin, Clemson/Florida St., Washington/Notre Dame, Alabama/Arkansas, Washington St./Arizona.
NFL: Jacksonville/Tennessee, Green Bay/Indianapolis, Tampa Bay/Oakland, Pittsburgh/Miami, Chicago/Minnesota, Dallas/Washington.
Something’s fishy here! Katie Beer took the top spot for the second week in a row for The Garden Island’s “Gridiron Challenge.”
Going into the season, Beer was skeptical about her chances and even said that she would be the one to bring the television crew down, with sports junkies, J. Robertson and Dickie Chang on her side, but instead, Beer is the frontrunner and is holding a commanding lead for herself and her TV squad.
Beer was the only person to pick Waimea over Kaua‘i and was nearly perfect with her choices the rest of the way.
Close friend of Beer, Shanna Pollard, The Garden Island’s publisher has said that Beer utilizes many sources, including pros to finalize her picks, but right now, her record speaks for itself.
The Surf’s Shelly Cobb is not doing so bad herself with a 17-10 record. However, Shel does use the dartboard to make her selections and it looks like it’s paying off for the radio crew who remain in second place right behind the TV gang.
As for The Garden Island, we’ve got some work to do. Paul is keeping Shanna and I in the hunt, but we both need to pull our own weight.
This week, there’s no Hawai‘i game, so most of us should do well. KONG’s Ron Wiley is still utilizing his dog Elvis to make his picks and at 15-12, Elvis should be getting more treats. FM97’s David Bice is happy that his Raider’s squad beat Buffalo last week and is going with Oakland again in a Superbowl rematch of two year’s ago against former Raider coach Jon Gruden and his Tampa Bay squad.
Wala‘au’s Dickie Chang and Ho‘ike’s J. Robertson are going against the grain by picking Kapa‘a and Kamehameha in the prep ranks. Is there something that J. and Dickie knows that the rest of us don’t? Well, we’ll find out as the weekend approaches.
