Kaua‘i’s Murayama claims reserve crown
By Duane Shimogawa – The Garden Island
Cora “The Iron Maiden” Murayama showed all the cowgirls around the state that the Kaua‘i paniolos are for real in the Kaua‘i All-Girls State Championship Rodeo at CJM Country Stables on September 19. Murayama finished behind Brandy Joseph of O‘ahu, who earned the All-Around Cowgirl title. Hawai‘i’s Fern White also got a piece of the reserve title. Murayama fetched the breakaway roping contest with the top time of 13.80, just edging out Kathy Rita at 13.84.
In the barrel racing competition, Jessica Keawe-Rueter (17.140) beat out Trisha Norris (17.420) and Kaua‘i’s Wendy Tannery (17.450) in division one action. Two Kaua‘i cowgirls, Kim Medeiros (18.75) and Apryl Soares (18.760) finished one and two in the second division.
Medeiros didn’t stop at the barrels, as she won the goat-tying contest (27.19) over Joseph (32.88). Tara Auskewicz (22.140) cruised past Tannery (22.500) in division one pole bending. In the second slot, Laureen Naumu-Balocan got the top time (25.210), followed by Cheree Vasconelles (25.3), Kim Medeiros (25.810), and Sheri Carveiro (25.84).
Medeiros made it a habit in beating Joseph and finishing in the top spot, as she claimed the steer undecorating contest (27.190) over the All-Around cowgirl (32.880). Joseph came back though and teamed with Shelby Rita to win the dally team competition. Kaua‘i’s Ho‘olai Braun and Roseanne “The Roadrunner” Shimogawa took home fourth-place honors. Shimogawa and Braun (23.620) also took the fourth spot in the calf-mugging event. Fern White and Cookie Kawamoto didn’t crumble, as they put it all together for the first-place prize (16.180), followed by Brittney Brun and White (17.870).

Wardrobe malfunction could cost CBS thousands
WASHINGTON — Federal regulators on Wednesday fined CBS a record $550,000 for Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction,” which exposed the singer’s breast during the Super Bowl halftime show. The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to slap each of the 20 CBS-owned television stations with the maximum indecency penalty of $27,500. The total penalty of $550,000 is the largest fine levied against a television broadcaster. Most of the FCC’s bigger fines have been against radio stations.
The agency’s five commissioners decided not to fine CBS’ more than 200 affiliate stations, which also aired the show but are not owned by the network’s parent company, Viacom. MTV, a Viacom subsidiary, produced the Feb. 1 halftime show, which featured Jackson and singer Justin Timberlake performing a racy duet. At the end, Timberlake ripped off a piece of Jackson’s black leather top, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of about 90 million. Timberlake blamed a “wardrobe malfunction,” and CBS was quick to apologize to viewers. The breast-baring song generated a record number of complaints to the FCC — more than 500,000.

SAN FRANCISCO — Peanuts, hot dogs and wireless instant replays. It’s the future of baseball.
SBC Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, is already a giant wireless hotspot. Next season, the team plans to offer Wi-Fi users instant replays on demand, possibly even of different angles on controversial plays. “We’re charting new territory here so it’s really going to be up to what our fans want,” said Bill Schlough, vice president and chief information officer of the Giants.
