It’s only the fifth match of the season and there’s already a heated rivalry brewing up between the Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball squad and the unblemished Waimea High School girls team.
The Menehune are sitting pretty at the top with a 2-0 record, while Kaua‘i is breathing right below their necks at 2-1.
In the previous match between the two teams, Waimea snuck away with a three-set win, as the packed Clem Gomes Gym watched both teams trade blows.
“We’re going into this match just like any other, but we should be ready for this one,” Kaua‘i High School girls head coach Rich Roberts said.
The volleyball world on the boys side reflects red and white, with the Red Raider men putting it into high gear.
By defeating Kapa‘a on Saturday, Kaua‘i wrapped up the first round title and rest at the top with a 3-0 record.
Head coach Shawn Doo is quick to mention that his team isn’t overlooking the tough field.
“Kapa‘a and Waimea have both played us tough and we can’t afford to not give 100% every time we play,” Doo said.
Kaua‘i faces off with Waimea today at the Raiderdome, with JV action starting things off at 3 p.m.
Kapa‘a makes the long trip to Waimea on Saturday to battle with the Menehune to conclude the first round of KIF volleyball action.
