The Haupu and Kualu ‘ohana held an unforgettable family reunion at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center from Aug. 6–8, 2004.
Three days of kanikapila, talk story with the kupuna, reminiscing about the olden days, celebrating new babies, water sports, a piñata for the kids, a trip up the Makaweli River and to the loi in Waimea Valley, exchanging and updating family genealogy — these and other activities filled the weekend.
There were so many relatives, the ‘ohana had a lot of catching up to do.
The many talented family members provided the entertainment, with Billy V as the emcee, the sounds of Stan and Marie Yadao, Island Breeze, Kapakanaenaeokauaiiki Hula Halau, Ole by Pilialoha, Enoka, and Keoki Baclayon, the Kekaha Boys “Wachutink” and numerous gifted family musicians and singers.
Families traveled from as far as Kentucky, Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, California, Washington, Missouri, Saipan, O‘ahu, Maui, Kona, Hilo and other parts of the United States. Plenty aloha was interchanged between “long time no see” relatives.
More than 300 family members attended.
