LIHU‘E — Just one point, but a big one for the Hanapepe Colts midgets squad, who took advantage of a botched 2-point try by Koloa’s Dawson Okinaka, to win the opener of their 2004 Pop Warner season yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
Okinaka, though had the presence in mind to run right into the endzone after the holder failed to hold onto the ball.
After a scoreless first quarter, Hanapepe’s Allen-Michael Gaspar punched through the Koloa line for a 1-yard TD run.
Cody Owen kicked the 2-point extra point to give Hanapepe the early 8-0 lead.
The Gaspar score would be the only points of the first half, as Koloa quarterback Tyrus Ceria-Lux and his offense couldn’t find a rhythm in the first half.
Also, Hanapepe’s defense remained strong throughout the first two quarters.
In the third quarter, Koloa managed to get on the scoreboard with a 3-yard TD run by Keli‘i Ruiz. The crucial 2-point conversion failed, but Okinaka ran it in for one point to cut the Hanapepe lead to one, 8-7.
The Raiders came close to the endzone with 7:00 minutes to go in the fourth, but Hilton Delima-Kamae fumbled on Hanapepe’s 2-yard line.
Koloa stormed back again with 3:25 to go, but Colts defensive back Cole Parangao intercepted a Ceria-Lux pass in the endzone to end the Koloa attempt.
With just 12 seconds on the clock, Okinaka’s 25-yard field goal attempt, which would’ve won the game for the Raiders, sailed left.
