HANAPEPE — After a first quarter scoreboard with two goose eggs, the Kaua‘i High School football team poured it on the rest of the way for a 26-0 domination over Waimea.
It was the Brendan Young show in the first half, as the Red Raider back muscled his way for two touchdowns, one on a 22-yard scamper, and another on a 12-yard boost.
The pair of Young scores gave Kaua‘i a 13-0 lead. Kicker Blake Gingerich managed to convert only one of the PAT’s.
At the end of the half, Young and Andrew Renaud combined for chunks of yardage, which enabled Kaua‘i signal-caller, Kainoa Lemke to heave a 3-yard TD pass to Gingerich, who proved his hands are just as good as his leg.
However, the Kaua‘i kicker failed to put the PAT through the uprights, but the Red Raiders still held a commanding lead at 19-0 going into the locker room at the half.
At the 7:00 minute mark in the third quarter, Renaud came in to take over the quarterbacking duties for Kaua‘i and converted a huge fourth down with a pass to Micah Alayvilla to the Waimea 27 yard line.
After a Young 15-yard jolt, Renaud decided to take it to the house himself with a 6-yard QB keeper on fourth down to give the Red Raiders a 26-0 lead. Gingerich came back strong to nail the PAT.
Waimea’s thin squad wasn’t able to muster up anything on the offensive end, until late in the third, as Wyatt Achuara’s long run accounted for the longest Menehune play all game long.
Kaua‘i’s BJ Rapozo’s INT at the 1:00 minute mark stopped the Menehune attempt.
Both teams weren’t able to put any points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
The next KIF game is on Friday, September 24, with Waimea facing Kapa‘a at Vidinha Stadium. The JV game starts at 5 p.m., with varsity action following at 7:35 p.m.
