Katie Beer of KT Productions made a great first impression in The Garden Island Gridiron Challenge’s initial week. Beer, along with The Garden Island’s associate editor, Paul C. Curtis came away with 10-3 marks, which were the top tallies for week one.
Beer’s key picks included the Colorado win, in which local product Jordon Dizon made a crucial play in the end against Washington St. and the Denver Broncos upset over Kansas City.
Curtis was able to master the NFL picks by only missing the Atlanta/San Francisco game. He also saved The Garden Island and helped the team stay above .500.
The radio team of Shelly Cobb (SURF), Ron Wiley (KONG), and David Bice (FM97) was the most successful team with Wiley and Cobb putting up 9-4 marks.
Bice would like to forget week one as he finished with a dismal 6-7 record to bring down the radio crew’s record. Wiley, who has been on vacation still utilizes his dog, Elvis’ abilities to make his picks. So, in a sense, we’re all up against Wiley and Elvis.
J Robertson’s 8-5 mark was respectable and put the tv crew at the top tied with the radio group, however, Dickie Chang’s miscues brought them down, as the wizard of Wala‘au was nothing like a magician in the first week with a record of 6-7. As for The Garden Island’s team, Curtis was relied upon to keep the crew afloat. Publisher Shanna Pollard and myself were anything but spectacular in our picks with identical 6-7 records.
So here we go into week number two and the picks get harder, but hopefully with a week of experience under our belt’s, we’ll be able to find the same success as Beer and Curtis. This week I added another high school game (Punahou/Kamehameha). Kaua‘i has a lot of ties to Kamehameha and Punahou too, so this should be an interesting game.
Kaua‘i High travels to the friendly confines of Hanapepe Stadium tonight to face Waimea High. This is going to be a tough game to pick, as both teams are loaded with talent. The Menehune and quarterback Max Hadwin will try to unseat the defending champion Red Raiders and quarterback Kekoa Crowell. If you love football, you can’t miss this one. JV start time is at 5 p.m., with varsity action kicking off at 7:35 p.m. On the college scene, former Menehune Jordon Dizon (he said he’d be keeping an eye on the KIF season) and Colorado will try to remain undefeated against North Texas, who shouldn’t pose a threat to the ‘Buffs.
Hawai‘i will try to bounce back and get into the win column, as they face Rice and in the pros, the Minnesota/Philadelphia and Indianapolis/Tennessee match-ups are tough calls.
