LIHU‘E – The third anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America that took place in New York City, Washington D.C. and above rural Pennsylvania is being marked today with low-key community events.
Kaua‘i firefighters are being honored at the Marriott Resort & Beach Club, while an outrigger canoe club in Hanalei is going out to sea this morning to drop lei in the ocean in remembrance.
Other events marking the tragic day are also expected including an order from Gov. Linda Lingle to fly flags in Hawai‘i at half-mast during the day.
Perhaps the most visible reminder of the event that took the lives of thousands through terrorism is the tight security that has since been imposed at Lihu‘e Airport.
Shannon Garcia-Hamilton, the U.S. Federal Security Director for Lihu‘e Airport said:
“In recalling the events of September 11, 2001, we use the memories of that day not only to reflect, but also to inspire and motivate our fight to defend freedom and preserve liberty against the terrorist threat.
Today also marks 14 years since Hurricane ‘Iniki devastated Kaua‘i. The two dates have become intertwined on the island, with local residents looking back on both as momentous days in their lives, days that also changed them forever.
