LIHU‘E — Although it’s Labor Day weekend, it didn’t stop parents from coming out and supporting their soccer playing youngsters at the North Vidinha Soccer Complex yesterday. KIUC’s Nelson Panit was doing double duty as both coach and referee for the under-six boys division. Panit, a Lihu‘e coach faced-off against coach McEvoy’s Kalaheo squad. Matthew Panit, the son of Nelson was busy scoring goals, as the three on three soccer game featured just as much laughter as goals scored.
While the two Panits were busy on the field, Gaynell (wife of Nelson) manned the camera, while Ofelia Manibog (Matthew’s grandma), Shantelle Manibog (Matthew’s aunty), and Sarah (Matthew’s aunty) did their best by heading up the Lihu‘e cheering section. Shantelle also practiced being a soccer mom, with son Cody in her lap. Cody, just 2 months young, is looking forward to his days on the soccer field. On the next field, Kaleo Smith of Smith’s Tropical Paradise and his wife were enjoying the battles on the field in Lihu‘e, but not after taking in the action in Koloa, watching their other son play. Has anyone ever seen Kaleo without Kamehameha Schools apparel?
On the girls side, Dean and Mary Pigao were under their shady tent watching their daughter, Whitney tear up the soccer field. Whitney is the sister of Ashton, who was a star goalie for the Kaua‘i High School girls soccer team.
Who knew that Dean and Mary would produce so many soccer standouts? AYSO action continues next week at any one of the county parks around the island.
