More on Kerry
Barbara Elmore is patently incorrect in her uneducated assessment of the National Guard.
As the son of an Alabama National Guard Major, I can attest to the fact that my father’s unit was shipped off to fight in South Korea in 1953 prior to my birth. Although it is not “seared into my mind” as the questionable Vietnam events are to Senator Kerry, I do sense a void because my dad was not at home for the first year of my life.
The National Guard is generally recognized as the first line of defense for our nation on home turf and their role has been diverse ever since the first Minutemen picked up rifles to defend us from the British. We owe them a debt of gratitude and should not denigrate or diminish them through some skewed and subjective interpretation of importance.
My father served for years in the Guard after returning home, with a significant sacrifice to our family. While my father was alive I spoke with him occasionally with interest about his service and usually had to pry it out of him, contrary to the flamboyant Senator Kerry who never lets us forget his war record! I’ll wager that Kerry’s kids run the other way when he starts obsessing about his war stories.
I take great umbrage to your misinformed analogy that people flee to this (National Guard) type of service. People provide service to our Country in many different ways and your rhetoric can only be recognized for the partisan politics of destruction that you subscribe to. I take great pride in making no distinction and thanking the quiet and brave Veterans of both the US Military and National Guard for their service to our Country.
