‘Adopt-a-Platoon’
It feels like a perfect time for your fine newspaper to do an article about the “Adopt-a-Platoon” project that has spread across America. My daughter Becky, a Guest Services Manager at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel, convinced her company to adopt the 3rd Platoon (B Co. 2-5 Infantry), a platoon of 34 men from Schofield Barracks, before they shipped out to Afghanistan in late April of this year. Because of this “adoption,” the boys in “our platoon” are receiving care packages and letters from Hyatt employees—and their families. I send a letter to one of our boys almost every day, and mail packages of suggested goodies, magazines and books every week. The Hyatt has now picked up the cost of the postage (to the APO in New York) for Oahu shipments, which makes it easier for everyone to send heavier items. I don’t want this to be a Letter to the Editor; I just hope you might want to describe the project for Kauaians who might want to adopt the local men and women who are getting ready to ship out to Iraq.
This program is a blessing—for both sides of the equation!
