Kori Sakamoto of the Kaumakani Supersonics is getting excited about practicing for the upcoming KYBA girls 14 Under basketball tournament featuring two Maui teams and an O‘ahu team competing against five Kaua‘i teams. Kori was at Sunday’s Plantation Days rodeo, but had to make sure she was at practice by 4 p.m. Coach Fran Constantino said that she’s asked several of the community members to help coach the teams while her husband Fernando serves his time in Iraq, but said, “We’ll be back.” Sunday’s practice was supposed to be headed up by Ashley Mier and Lorraine Lagoc according to Kori, both student coaches finishing with the Westside Hornets in the recently-completed 19 Under girls league. Rosie Bukoski had her ‘ohana on hand right on the heels of the successful Carlsbad Goodwill Games. The Tafiti sisters welcomed the start of their final week of games in the 14 Under softball program as they helped out at the KJ’s booth at the ho‘olaule‘a where their uncle Joe Grace was the food coordinator. Deanna Tafiti, all of 7 years old, was flipping burgers like a pro while sister Davelyn, 10 years young, had the mechanics of completing the box lunches down pat for sister Shana, 13, who fielded the orders from the non-stop lines – definitely, a family affair! Meanwhile, over at KCC, welcome to the students from the Okinawa Prefectural College of Nursing who are here – tour coordinator Shoko Nakamatsu must really like the loco moco she had since she mistook the dish for the massage – anyone for some lomi salmon? Brian Yamamoto, Bill Blackburn, and John Isobe did a good job coordinating the tour that will have them joining Mahelona Hospital’s Josie Pablo for the final beach outing next Tuesday at Lydgate Park.
