Equal pay
Republican Governor Linda Lingle vetoed a bill last earlier this month that would have prohibited employers from paying women less than men for equal work.
House Bill 2025 would have established a four-year pay equity task force under the Office of the Governor. “The bill is unnecessary since federal and state laws already prohibit employers from discriminating on the basis of gender,” Lingle said. “Moreover, the scope of review for the pay equity task force is broad and vague.”
Big winners
Judy Camara and her son, Adam, from Concord, California, won a free one-week trip to Kaua‘i, courtesy of Island Soap and Candle Works in Kilauea. They’re the winners of the 4th annual “Tell a Friend” contest, and the Kaua‘i-based company is paying for round-trip airfare, a week’s stay at the Aloha Beach Resort, a gift package of products, discounts at their Koloa and Kilauea Stores, and a tour of their factory in Kapaa — all worth at least $1,700.
Island Soap’s Steve Mitchell emailed the winner, but it took awhile for her to believe him. Visitors to the Kaua‘i-based company’s website, www.islandsoap.com, enter various friend’s names, giving the company word-of-mouth advertising and shoppers a chance to win a trip to paradise. Island Soaps and Candles is one of Kaua‘i’s true success stories. Started in 1984, the company began out in Kekaha, moved to Kilauea, began producing enmasse from their Kapaa factory, and later opened a store in Koloa. Word got out and, soon, demand for the fragrant line of soaps, candles and lotions forced them to open shops on Maui and in Oahu’s Ward Center.
