LIHU‘E — Until the reporter asked the question, Lynn McCrory had not given too much thought to the fact that she had agreed to serve on volunteer boards for both a Democratic governor and a Republican mayor.
She recently completed an eight-year stint as the Kaua‘i representative on the state Board of Land and Natural Resources, appointed and re-appointed by then Gov. Ben Cayetano, a Democrat.
Wednesday, June 2, McCrory, president of Pahio Resorts, Inc., was scheduled to be sworn in as a member of the county Board of Water Supply, nominated to the position by Republican Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste.
“I don’t think I ever looked at it as a party thing,” McCrory said. “I’ve known Bryan for 20 years,” and told him that she’d be happy to serve in a volunteer capacity once her BLNR terms expired, she said.
“He asked, and I was happy to serve,” she added.
“If I can help the county with the experience I’m bringing from the BLNR, that will be good for the county,” she said.
At her last BLNR meeting at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall last week, McCrory was honored for her years of service by state Department of Land and Natural Resources Kaua‘i employees.
She was presented with a maile lei, a wooden plaque shaped like the island of Kaua‘i, and two purple, Brazilian purpleheart wooden canoe paddles (purple being the island’s color).
The paddles took Mike Laureta 21 hours to fashion out of the one-piece wood.
McCrory said the DLNR managers and staff on this island “really care about Kaua‘i,” and that it was “exciting to worth with them and be with them.”
