Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative members and staff gathered Sunday afternoon in Puhi to do business, and have fun.
Keynote guest speaker was Lorraine Shin from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Hawai‘i state office.
The cooperative’s annual report was presented by cooperative Chairman Gregg Gardiner.
In the annual report, Gardiner said the cooperative has 137 employees. He said the highlight of the past year was the $40-million-plus acquistion of the 26.4 MW electrical generating plant in Kapaia.
He also said a study is being done on renewable energy sources to see which one would be most feasible to implement on Kaua‘i.
Gardiner said an outreach by KIUC to a cooperative in Ilocos Sur in the Philippines has included donation of two trucks refinished by volunteer labor and to be sent to the Philippines with funds from a federal grant. Retired lineman are ready to go the Asian nation to help out, he said.
Another highlight was the aid given to American Samoa through the assistance of electric workers from KIUC following a devastating hurricane.
President and CEO Alton Miyamoto said in the report that the cooperative has moved ahead with distribution of its first patronage capital refund checks totaling about $1.7 million. The report showed equal assets and liabilities of $281 million.
