Kukui‘Ula project – another take
As one who has Hawaiian blood, I read with interest the comments Mr. Rupert Rowe made at the Planning Committee Thursday in opposition to Kukui‘Ula on behalf of the Hawaiian community. It appears that his concerns — traffic, lack of infrastructure, rising property values — are not endemic to native Hawaiians, but includes everyone in the community.
That being the case, meaning that the entire community — Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart — are all in the same boat here. I suggest we should look to what the developer offers our community and ask whether they are going to be a positive or a negative agent of change.
I understand that the developer is helping build roads that will solve the traffic congestion, they are adding capacity to the county’s supply of water, they have contributed to the waste treatment infrastructure, they are shouldering their fair share of taxes and they have made a contribution to the county for affordable housing. Indeed, affordable housing is something we all need more of.
I also want to voice my appreciation for the opportunities they are providing for employment, both for me now, and for my kids in the future.
These are kids that are both Hawaiian, as well as Hawaiians at heart.
Thank you for considering these ideas, and I hope that other Hawaiians will voice their concerns and hopes.
