A 41-year-old Wailua man and a Kilauea woman were arrested yesterday following a high-speed chase involving as many as eight Kaua‘i Police Department vehicles and cars reaching speeds of over 75 mph through Lihu‘e.
Daniel Bonanno was arrested for fourth-degree theft, second-degree criminal property damage, resisting the order to stop a motor vehicle, and reckless driving, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
Marianne Trombley was arrested for fourth-degree theft in relation to the incident.
At about 1 p.m. yesterday, KPD officers received a report of occupants of a vehicle, described by witnesses as small, off-white Toyota sedan, allegedly stole items from the Home Depot in Kukui Grove Village West.
Officers spotted the car on Haleko Road in Lihu‘e, but the driver refused to stop.
According to Ozaki, KPD officers chased the vehicle down Rice Street, past Nawiliwili Harbor, past Kukui Grove, onto Kaumuali‘i Highway, and headed east, back into Lihu‘e and onto Kuhio Highway.
In Kapaia, in the vicinity of Ken Silva’s Auto Body, the car was boxed in by KPD officers, and the two were arrested.
At points during the chase, the vehicles hit speeds over 75 mph, and the Toyota hit a police car on the passenger side, causing minor damage.
KPD officers were in the process of obtaining a search warrant at presstime, and further charges could be added, pending the results of the search and subsequent investigation, Ozaki said.
Fourth-degree theft is a petty misdemeanor, for the alleged theft of items valued under $300.
Bonanno was arrested recently in relation to an armed robbery at Coconut Marketplace, when a visitor was accosted in the men’s restroom by a man brandishing a gun, said Ozaki. He was released pending further investigation.
Trombley is out on bail for a number of charges, including second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, for which she pleaded not guilty at arraignment in January.
A jury trial is scheduled for next month. She also was arrested in March for fourth-degree theft, resisting arrest, attempted assault on a police officer, and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
She pleaded not guilty to those charges, and a jury trial is scheduled for May 18.
